Who We Are and What We Do
Our mission is to secure the conservation of marine life globally by supporting organizations that work collaboratively for ocean health through science, community conservation, and marine protection efforts
Charitable Organizations We Support
It Starts With the Will to Make a Difference
Helping to educate the public and spread awareness about ocean conservation issues is a big part of our mission, and Birch Aquarium at Scripps has been doing this since 1992 (although Scripps has had a public aquarium for over 100 years.) They encourage exploration, curiosity and love for our oceans through interactive exhibits while showcasing important research and conservation work being conducted at Scripps and around the world.
5 Gyres is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping solve the global crisis of plastic pollution. They do this in a myriad of ways including research, public engagement, and helping to enact policy from a local to federal scale. Our foundation has helped support their work in conjunction with their Travel Trawl, and TrashBlitz programs.
OneReef is another nonprofit organization aimed at protecting coral reefs - a not only beautiful but critically important ecosystem to our oceans and the world in general. One way in which they do this is through local community support and engagement. We helped to fund their Project Million Acres campaign.
WILDCOAST is an international team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and addresses climate change through natural solutions. They establish and manage protected areas, advance strong conservation policies, and engage communities in the protection and stewardship of healthy, thriving oceans, coastlines and wildlife.
Blue Latitudes is an innovative foundation focusing on responsible ocean stewardship. One important aspect of their work which we've helped support is an initiative to implement a Rigs to Reefs program in California. This is a viable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly way of decommissioning offshore oil platforms and turning them into artificial reefs and marine habitats.
Global Conservation was founded to protect our most important and endangered wild spaces. They are the only nature conservation group whose sole mission is the direct funding of park protection systems for saving national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in developing countries.
LegacyWorks Group enables local communities in Baja Sur to address complex challenges and meet critical needs through highly collaborative initiatives. Each initiative uncovers new impact opportunities and builds capacity to collaborate on bigger needs. Over time growing project portfolios create pathways to larger scale outcomes. We illustrate this process as a widening spiral, with each initiative a stepping stone on the path to systemic change.
Over the past several years we have supported the Sandin Lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, especially in connection with their 100 Island Challenge - a research effort aimed at better understanding the world's coral reefs and how to protect them.
For the past several years, the Mary G Jameson Foundation has supported Dr. Octavio Aburto's work in conjunction with the Gulf of California Marine Program to expand research and programming on emerging coastal and marine policy issues of importance to Mexico.
With 20 years of on-the-water experience, WildAid Marine has pioneered an approach to marine enforcement that empowers local leaders to strengthen monitoring and surveillance, meet conservation goals, and provide lasting benefits for endangered wildlife, marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal communities.
Founded in 1965 and based on USC’s Los Angeles campus and Catalina Island, the Wrigley Institute for Environment and Sustainability educates the next generation of change agents, leads solutions-focused research at the intersection of people and planet, and engages with the public to inspire positive change.
